Happy Halloween

Written on October 31st in Uncategorized

Halloween happens to be the other half of Team Walker’s most favorite holiday. When he called me this morning with his idea for his costume, he was a little giddy. With all the drama and hoopla surrounding the fall down the stairs and the mouth being wired shut, I never got around to ordering all his TAPs gear to be Steve from Ghosthunters. I guess I just kinda forgot about Halloween. So, this morning, I ran around to the store and a couple different Haloween shops to gather what I could for his costume. I also made canneloni and in honor of the holiday, pumpkin pasta-a recipe from Rachel Ray I caught the other day. Not really a big Rachel fan since I’m far too sarcastic and dry to handle all the peppiness, but sometimes she comes up with a great recipe. So, I made the pasta dishes but I’m waiting for Rob to get home for work to test them to see if I need to add anything. He called a few minutes ago to ask how they turned out-to which I responded, “Um…how do I know? I can’t taste them.” That was a Duh moment. It looks like I’ll be back to work next week. I’m just waiting for my doctor to fill out some paperwork.
Oh. And Rob’s costume?

Things I’m Never Taking for Granted Again…

Written on October 28th in Uncategorized

With so much time on my hands, I’ve been pontificating on things that I’ve always taken for granted. Today, I have the rubber bands off so I can have some soft food and exercise my jaw. Scrambled eggs and bisuits/gravy from Gebby’s never tasted so good! It took me about an hour to eat but it was soooo nice to have normal food. And, I’m having a pumpkin spice latte right now-and it’s hot. Contrary to many peoples’ idea, I’m not living off ice cream or shakes. I’ve been doing tons of smoothies with soy protein powder and flaxseed oil. I also discovered that egg drop soup isn’t bad through a straw. Here is a beginner list of things I’ve tried to do out of habit and then realized it was a no go…and I won’t take them for granted ever again:
* chewing gum (I saw someone on tv blowing bubbles and I about lost it)
*whistling (not that I could do it very well before)
*licking an envelope (that one really pissed me off)
*yawning (the pressure is unbelievable)
*sneezing (another pressure issue)
*gargling (technically, I can do this but I end up making a huge mess and the front of my shirt gets soaked)
*kissing (it’s all about pecks)
*drinking a beer out of a bottle
*drinking anything with a straw
*breath spray (yes, I put it up to my mouth and then groaned)

First dinner (it’s five weeks away but I can’t wait)
*Alwan’s filet on the grill
*asparagus w/ hollandaise sauce
*green beans
*massive baked potatoe

What Am I Doing?

Written on October 23rd in Uncategorized

Thursday will be the one week mark since having my jaw wired. My medication is a form of liquid vicodin and tylenol which I’m supposed to take 3 syringes of every four hours. I’m trying to wean myself off by not getting up in the middle of the night to take the doses. But, when I wake up in the morning and take the dose along with the antibiotic, I’m certain to crash for a few more hours. Pretty much everytime I take a dose I’m ready for sleepy time within half an hour.
I did get to talk to a couple friends on Sunday. Thankfully, they were able to decipher what the hell I was mumbling about. And it was really nice to know that they weren’s going to let my inabilty to converse get in the way of something so normal. I felt human again.

We went to Schnuck’s yesterday to stock up on soups, ice cream, fruit, yogurt and everything to make smoothies. Nothing like being in a candy store when you’re a diabetic, right? I made chicken and noodles which Rob tells me is pretty good but I’m not quite ready to try and blend that. The dentist told us that he’s never suprised at what people will blend: pizza, hot dogs, lasagna etc… I really haven’t reached that point yet though.

WOW

Written on October 21st in Uncategorized

I’m only four days into my jaw being wired shut and I’m going crazy. The good news is that it may just be for four weeks instead of eight weeks. When I fell down the stairs, I knew something wasn’t right with my jaw and my alignment. My teeth didn’t even touch. Now, I can at least feel the same alignment I had before. Not being able to talk is just about killing my spirit. It’s impossible to talk on the phone and talking to someone in person is so frustrating because no one except Rob can understand me. I’m really nervous about how much I move around because of my anxiety of having an asthma attack when I really can’t open my mouth. Between the fractured jaw and fractured rib, I’d take the rib anyday.

Really?

I can’t believe this.
I went to a gas station to get air in my tires and holy shit, the air pump was working.
Normally I have to drive around to twelve different gas stations because either a) I pull up, throw .75 in the machine and nothing happens or b) an old torn Out of Order sign in barely hanging on by the gum somebody stuck it on with.
I think the skies parted and angels sang.

I have, however, come up with a brand new huge pet peeve.
When calling someone for work, I generally leave a message or talk to someone who is extremely excited. I’m not used to gatekeepers because I’m not trying to sell anyone anything. I really don’t appreciate a gatekeeper when the person I called is obviously standing next to the gatekeeper and the gatekeeper is relaying my message to that person. Believe it or not, I’m not deaf yet and I can hear you. Sometimes I wish I had the ability to be a huge pompous ass but I think that gene got lost in the mix.

Make Plans for The Weekend

Written on October 10th in Uncategorized

The temperature has dropped which can mean only one thing! Friday, Saturday and Sunday marks the opening weekend of the Peoria House on Haunted Northmoor at Expo Gardens. The hours throughout the Halloween season are Fri & Sat 7:00-11:30pm and Sun 7:00-10:00pm. Admission is just $7.00 per person. There’s been some changes this year so while we’ve improved some of the most popular rooms, we’ve also created new rooms we hope will become favorites. I’ll be helping out Friday and Saturday so I just may be your tour guide! You don’t actually think I’d be a monster do you? The major rule of House on Haunted Northmoor is to not put a mask on the girl with asthma. Doesn’t work out too well:)

Update…

Written on October 8th in Uncategorized

I feel like my back is having a war with my allergies to see which can make me more miserable. Yes, I skipped the Bears game in favor of a bed and a book. I hear they won so maybe that’s what did it for them.

I just finished The Heroine Diaries by Nikki Sixx and am halfway thru Inside the Mind of BTK: The True Story Behind the Thirty Year Hunt for the Notorious Wichita Serial Killer by John Douglas. Next on the list, Playing for Pizza by John Grisham. I think after reading the first two books, the third will be slightly more tame.

I just bought the third season of The Office and the second season of Criminal Minds, both shows I heart very much. But, to expand my horizons, I also purchased the first season of Weeds which I’ve heard great things about but never get around to ordering Showtime again. I guess between Weeds and Dexter, I really should.

I’m sure there’s something I’m forgetting…

Boring…

Written on October 4th in Uncategorized

Things have been relatively uneventful lately. Oh wait. Scratch that. Tuesday morning, right after Rob left for work, IL American Water showed up to switch my meter. Yes, they’ve sent letters but it’s never a good time to miss work, yada…yada…yada… So, after I went into the room with the water meter (also containing Rob’s hunting gear, decorations for every holiday imaginable and things we haven’t even seen since we moved into the house eight years ago), moved things out of the way and located the thing, more problems. Apparenlty some coupling on the meter had an ‘illegal’ component. Don’t ask me. I’m guessing the last time someone had to do something to the water meter there weren’t any regulations or whatever. So, the service woman told me she had to turn the water off until I had it fixed and they could come back out to replace the water meter. Once again, because I never responded to the letter they sent. Whatever. I called Rob because I had waaaay to much going on at work to deal with what was going to become an all day event. To sum it up, we paid a plumber $80 to remove said ‘illegal’ component and replace it with a ‘regulation’ component. Then the water company came back and all was fine by about 3:30pm.
On the plus side, Rob was able to get alot of cleaning out of the way. The boys (and a girlfried) are coming into town tomorrow for the weekend. While we’re working until about 1am tomorrow (uhhh, Saturday I guess) we do have all day Saturday and Sunday to hang out. Of course, Rob having the job he does, has Monday off. It’s so unfair.
Other than that, it’s been a boring week.
