Affordable Housing?

Written on March 15th in Uncategorized

Yesterday, WCBU aired a debate between mayoral candidates Dave Ransburg and Jim Ardis. According to the Peoria Journal Star:
Ransburg said Peoria is trying to revitalize the Downtown with the Heart of Peoria plan; has established affordable housing Downtown; and is trying to make the city more pedestrian friendly
Excuse me? Affordable housing? Could you tell me where that is? I’m curious to where you could buy a loft or condo for under $100,000? Are we talking about the Civic Center Plaza building which has apartments for rent? I thought Ray Becker was responsible for bringing that to fruition. Are we talking about River West? We tore down a housing project and built townhomes. The only problem with that is that if I were to buy a home, it would cost me between $80,000 and $100,000. If I qualified to receive financial aid from The State, I could pay as little as $50 a month. Why would I want to pay a $500-$900 monthly mortgage when my neighbors pay a fraction of that?
Are we talking affordable for a CEO of a corporation or affordable for Peoria’s average Joe?
